It was left to Bottas to chase Vettel, who made a clean getaway from the start, with Verstappen nearly passing the Finn before the order settled down.

The Ferrari driver insisted that he hadn't been "sandbagging" in the previous practice sessions, and said he was delighted that everything had suddenly clicked in qualifying.

"I need to go deeper and deeper into this of course, but it seems no-one really knew". With a new engine upgrade fitted to Vettel's auto this weekend, Ferrari was expected to be one of the favourites in Canada but Vettel was not happy with his performance after he was restricted to just 17 laps in second practice due to vehicle issues at the start of the session. I just couldn't find the rhythm.

"It was a bit different, it was a bit mixed today so I'm not entirely happy with the feel inside the auto yet".

Vettel revealed that he'd brushed the barriers on Friday and damaged the SF71H in the process, requiring overnight repairs. "I dedicate it to the team and to the Canadian (Ferrari) fans".

"It's unbelievable", said Vettel afterwards.

The race happens Sunday afternoon, start time is 2:10 p.m.

"You can't take anything for granted and think it will be a walk in the park. A very good day". He had lost two seconds and Vettel, turning the screw, responded with a fastest lap before cruising to a crushing victory.

"Obviously it was finished there at that point", said the Finn, who appeared perplexed by the incident. I think they peaked a bit early, but majority are men so it might happen. "But I love the idea, that's why I said yes even though I was pushing like fudge to get them in". Under the rules, the 70-lap race was cut short to just 68, though it didn't impact the result of the race among the points-scorers.

"It's a pity, but what can you do?"

Verstappen also never came under pressure as he finished a second adrift of Bottas and a massive 12 seconds ahead of his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, who vaulted Lewis Hamilton during the pit stops.

Raikkonen will be on the ultrasoft tyres while Ricciardo will start the race on Pirelli's latest hypersoft compound. "Obviously we were managing some things in the background". "But we have to say that Ferrari's auto, as a package, is unbelievable".

Vettel says starting on the purple-wall tyres was a straightforward decision to make and hope it'll work out in his favour to win around Canada for the first time since 2013. Having shown formidable race pace in the opening rounds Ferrari had been on the back foot to Mercedes but they brought an engine upgrade to this race which has put them right back in contention. "But I guess they have their reasons".
