Bad news, Safari users: Apple is breaking all directly downloaded.safariextz extensions with the release of Safari 12 later this year.

This isn't the first time that the iPhone maker has taken action against mining apps. Initial offerings including futures investments, or other securities dealing with cryptocurrencies must be offered by an established bank, securities firm or exchange. "Apps, including any third party advertisements displayed within them, may not run unrelated background processes, such as cryptocurrency mining".

Apple additionally wants to ensure the seriousness of Initial Coin Offerings, cryptocurrency futures trading, and other crypto-securities or quasi-securities trading.

Apple has been pushing extension developers toward Safari App Extensions for a few years now. The technology giant reversed its stance soon after, despite pulling moves like removing multi-cryptocurrency wallet Jaxx after its disapproval of Dash in 2016.

Such extensions will still work with Safari 12, but being depreciated means it's only a matter of time until support is dropped entirely, at which point only Safari App Extensions will work.

In July 2017, Apple 'approved' Dash as a cryptocurrency.

After the cryptominer was found to contain buggy code that made CPU usage on users devices spike, Apple pulled Calendar 2 from the macOS App Store. As AppleInsider notes, the Review Guidelines were previously less concerned with cryptocurrencies, allowing an app to facilitate crypto and ICO transactions if it complied with the laws in the app's distributed territories. Finally, cryptocurrency apps can't offer currency as a reward for downloading other apps, posting to social networks or encouraging other users to download apps.
