US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who is also in Singapore, said in a tweet that Washington is "committed to the complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula".

Trump advisers cast his actions as a show of strength before the Kim meeting.

In return, Kim, said to be in his mid-thirties, called Trump "mentally deranged" and a "dotard".

He would not say whether that included the possibility of withdrawing USA troops from the Korean Peninsula, but said the context of the discussions was "radically different than ever before".

Exuding confidence, Trump said he has done relatively little formal preparation.

Trump and Kim lookalikes held a summit of their own at a local shopping mall, while one bistro is offering a libation known as the Trump-Kim "Bromance:" Beer, tequila, diet Coke and the Korean distilled rice liquor known as soju.

The two leaders landed in Singapore hours apart on Sunday.

Asked Saturday about his goals, he said: "Well, I think the minimum would be relationship".

"It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before". He told reporters he thinks he will know nearly immediately whether a deal can be made, saying: "I will know, just my touch, my feel".
