Reality Check: Trump’s Tariffs & Canadian Retaliation

Trump says 'let Russia back in' as he heads to G-7 summit

Trudeau had announced that the G7 members - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the USA - had agreed upon a joint communiqué, or formal statement, after a hard week on trade issues.

The summit host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, kicked things off without waiting for those he described as "stragglers" to arrive.

Surrounded by G7 leaders, President Donald Trump, and Trump alone, can be seen sitting - arms crossed.

And Roland Paris, a former foreign policy adviser to Trudeau, jabbed at Trump on Twitter: "Big tough guy once he's back on his airplane".

The leaders of the G7, the world's most powerful industrialized countries including Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Britain, Japan and the U.S., meet every year to discuss collaboration on issues like world economy, climate change, security and peace.

He said: "Why are we having a meeting without Russian Federation in the meeting? Take down your tariffs & barriers or we will more than match you!"

Just as the G7 meeting of the world's leading industrialised nations had seemed to weather Mr Trump's threats of a trade war, the president backed out of the group's joint statement that Mr Trudeau said all the leaders had come together to sign.

"Canadians, we're polite, we're reasonable, but we also will not be pushed around".

Two Trump advisers have used television interviews to attack Trudeau following the summit. "They have tariffs on certain dairy and food products - 290 [to] 295 percent".

Mr. Trump's tweets taking aim at the leader of a country that has always been a USA ally came after the President left the G7 summit in Canada to travel to Singapore ahead of a planned diplomatic meeting with North Korean Leader Kim Jong-un, CNN reported.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has pressed Washington to reconsider the United States tariffs imposed on Canadian steel and aluminum, and encouraged President Donald Trump to work with Canada to address unfair trade. "And that's what bad faith Justin Trudeau did at that stunt press conference".

Trudeau said he and Trump have disagreed over Trump's call for Canada to open up its supply management system, which protects dairy, poultry and eggs farmers, during the hard ongoing renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement. "We joined the communique in good faith", Kudlow said.

Mr. Trump's top economic adviser, Lawrence Kudlow, said Mr. Trudeau's press conference had been a "betrayal" because Mr. Trump couldn't afford to show any weakness before his meeting with North Korea.

"I feel that this has become a bad relationship; a relationship based on the President taking exactly what he wants", Grant's prime minister says.

The now-rejected communique acknowledged the importance of "free, fair and mutually beneficial trade and investment". He also attacked Trudeau's character, calling the Liberal Party leader meek, weak and dishonest.
