Stoke City confirm first signing of the summer

Stoke City have signed Nigeria global midfielder Oghenekaro Peter Etebo on a five-year contract from Portuguese club Feirense, the second-tier Championship club said on Monday.

Then, last week, reports broke that Liverpool are monitoring Xherdan Shaqiri as a potential incoming this summer, with the Swiss winger's £13 million relegation release clause viewed as good business.

Sources have told ESPN FC that Shaqiri's brother and agent met with Liverpool officials last Friday to discuss a possible move to Anfield and that talks are also ongoing with several other clubs - though the player himself is now away in Russian Federation preparing for the World Cup.

Stoke City manager, Gary Rowett said: "We're really excited to have got the deal over the line for Etebo".

The Switzerland worldwide has made no secret of the fact he is looking to quit Stoke City this summer following the club's relegation from the Premier League and a stay in England's top flight is his first choice.

Etebo, who will represent his country in this month's World Cup in Russian Federation, is Stoke's first signing of the close season with the Potters paying 7.2 million euros (6.4 million pounds) for the 22-year-old.

Stoke's Chief Executive Tony Scholes said: "We are delighted Etebo has chosen to join Stoke City, becoming our first signing of the summer".

"Etebo is a very mobile, energetic midfielder and he's a great age".

You may have seen him last week after he came on as a substitute for Nigeria in their friendly against England.

He will be part of the Nigerian squad that will face Group D World Cup games against Argentina, Iceland and Croatia.

He made 12 appearances for Las Palmas whilst on loan with the team from Gran Canaria.
