Sen. Cardin: U.S. can't make concessions without North Korea action

Kim-Trump summit: Where does it leave the main players?

Kim-Trump summit: Where does it leave the main players?

The world watched as President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un arrived at the Capella Hotel in Singapore, shook hands and posed for photos before going into their historic one-on-one meeting early Tuesday morning.

"Just landed - a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office".

Beyond the tub-thumping soundbites of the Singapore summit, the unprecedented get-together left many questions unanswered and some USA allies in the region facing an uncertain future.

Trump was also optimistic about the progress they achieved, stating, "We are going to take care of a very big and very unsafe problem for the world".

Trump's tweets pointed to one of the chief gains at the summit from the United States point of view - that its scheduling and the establishing of a relationship between the President and Kim have eased fears that the two sides are on a slide toward a disastrous war. So, the president made some concessions.

Pompeo noted that the agreement's specifics needed to be reached, but that the goal of the agreement was in print and signed by Trump and Kim. Meeting with Kim Jong Un was an interesting and very positive experience.

Following the summit, Trump told reporters during a news conference in Singapore that Kim agreed to "destroying a major missile engine testing site" and that it would be done "very soon", without elaborating further on which testing site or timing.

A television screen at the Baro bar broadcasts the Singapore summit meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, as customers sit at the bar in the Korea Town section of Manhattan, New York, U.S., June 11, 2018.

But the future remains uncertain - the USA and North Korea did not reach any agreement on the details of how to achieve or verify that denuclearization.

Trump received a 51 percent approval rating for his handling of North Korea and also led the list of leaders who should take the most credit for the summit and the joint pledge.

The welcome from Japan was conspicuously less effusive than from other countries, with Tokyo under direct threat from North Korean missiles and reliant on the USA for its defence.

Well, Judy, we want diplomacy to win here.
