Grenfell Tower 1 year on Going Underground at ground zero

A few days ahead of the anniversary, the Bishop of London opened a memorial garden in the grounds of St Clement's Church, Notting Dale, which stands in the shadow of Grenfell Tower.

Alix Mabon, 25, praised the bravery of three teenagers who drew her attention to the blaze in the 20-storey tower block before running up the stairs knocking on doors. She said the trip made a real difference: "It's unbelievable. We're going to be the next Grenfell".

The fire started through a faulty fridge in the kitchen of a 4th-floor flat in the 24-story tower.

Relatives of those who died have recently provided heart-rending testimony about their loved ones' final moments at the beginning of a public inquiry into the fire, reminding Britons of the shocking scale of the tragedy.

Another, Caleb Parker, said residents sounded the alarm by banging on their neighbours' doors.

"Forever in our Hearts", citizens' group Grenfell United tweeted.

"My thoughts are all the time with people that are no longer with us but mainly with the families of those people because their wounds are very much open and very painful".

On June 14 past year a massive fire ripped through the 24-storey apartment tower, the rapid spread of which was blamed on flammable cladding.

It lasted 72 seconds, one for each of the people who died on the night of the fire, and one for a woman who died in hospital months after she was rescued from the burning building.

"I heard someone else banging on the door saying, "fire, get out".

Mr Lammy appealed for the quest for justice to be renewed, saying: "Justice, answers and the healing that follows from knowing never, ever, ever again can people die in a preventable fire, and all of those who live in the surrounding area can be so traumatised by the pain of what they saw that night and what they carry in their hearts now as a outcome".

Ms Mabon said there was no official advice to evacuate and wants a full building inspection and investigation. "We're really grateful, we're so honoured to have this moment of a day and to see them smiling and say 'it was the best day!'"

"I had no idea where the fire was". Before the fire, residents had complained about lack of safety in the building and warned that a massive fire could happen.

The anniversary of the Grenfell Tower fire is an opportunity to "make sure that the world is still listening" so such a tragedy never happens again, a survivor has said.

"Having listened carefully to concerns, the government intends to ban the use of combustible materials on the external walls of high-rise residential buildings, subject to consultation".
