Apple strikes deal with Oprah Winfrey as it pushes into original programming

Apple has inked a multiyear deal with Oprah Winfrey to create original programs for its streaming service.

Together, Winfrey and Apple will create original programmes that "embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world", the tech giant said in a statement on Saturday.

The partnership with Winfrey, 64, regarded as one of the most influential people in the entertainment business, is the biggest original content deal struck by Apple so far.

Whether Winfrey herself will appear in the shows she'll produce is not yet known.

Winfrey is the CEO of the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) which is a US-based television channel owned by Harpo Studios and Discovery Inc.

She recently extended her contract with OWN through 2025.

I hear her OWN exclusivity is for ad-supported cable only, and she is allowed to produce and appear on-camera on other platforms on a limited basis. She's also acted in a variety of productions over the years, like "The Color Purple", which scored her an Oscar nom, "Lee Daniels' The Butler", "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" and Disney's "A Wrinkle in Time". Harpo Films produced several Academy Award-winning movies including "Selma", which featured Winfrey in a starring role.

Winfrey also runs O, The Oprah Magazine and published the New York Times best-selling cookbook "Food, Health and Happiness" previous year.

It has also ordered a remake of Steven Spielberg's 1980s science fiction anthology series Amazing Stories.

Apple "aggressively pursued" Winfrey, who was also in talks with services like Netflix and Amazon.

Netflix ignited the current talent wars with aggressive nine-figure deals for Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy.
