Apple Admits to Sticky MacBook Pro Keyboards, Will Fix Them for Free

Apple admits MacBook keyboard flaws, promises free fixes

Apple acknowledged Friday that some of its MacBook and MacBook Pro models have sticky keyboards, and will offer free repairs and refunds to anyone affected by the flaw. To ameliorate the frustration - which has led to class-action lawsuits - Apple will service affected keys and keyboards, free of charge, and possibly refund those who paid for previous fix.

Many blame the Butterfly-style switches inside of the keys of MacBooks for the "sticky" behavior Apple references. Now having the same issue with my MacBook Pro and hearing countless others with the same experience, it seems it wasn't me after all. The models affected will be covered for four years from time of purchase.

Computers eligible for the free fix program include some MacBook Retina 12-inch models from early 2015 and early 2016, as well as 2017. The so-called "butterfly" keys allowed for a much lower-profile keyboard with reduced travel distance when pressed. If any keyboard repairs are necessary, they'll be provided at no cost. Well, in 2015 Apple switched to thin "Butterfly" switches for the both MacBook and Macbook Pro lines of laptops.

The situation was so dire, in fact, that some customers had enough and filed a class action lawsuit against Apple for the quality and failure rate of the new keyboards. Another incident happened when iPhone 4 users complained about no signals on their phones, to which Apple provided a solution by handing free "bumper" cases to the users. Jason Snell, editor of Six Colors and former editor-in-chief of Macworld magazine, wrote in April 2018, "Apple's relative silence on this issue for existing customers is deafening".

The type of service will be determined after the keyboard is examined and may involve the replacement of one or more keys or the whole keyboard.
But tech site The Verge has called the keyboards "famously problematic". Affected users may contact an Apple Authorized Service Provider, make an appointment at an Apple Retail Store, or mail in their device for service.

Apple said the problems involved only a "small percentage" of laptop keyboards.
