Instagram Video Chat Has Arrived

While Instagram remained tightlipped on the development, it foreshadowed the rollout of video calling at the beginning of May.

Besides video chat support, Instagram is rolling out a few other features as part of this update, including topic channels in Explore, and new camera effects for Stories. Having said that, the video chat feature on Instagram isn't that bad as we tested it out and it works way better than what we thought when the feature was announced. In order to start a video chat, all you have to do is head to Instagram Direct (that paper airplane icon at the top right of the app), open a message with a friend or a group of up to three other friends, and tap on the new blue camera icon in the top right corner of the screen.

You can only call people you're connected to, i.e. you follow them and they follow you back.

After teasing the new video chat feature during Facebook's F8 conference last month, the company has chose to go forth in dropping the feature as part of Instagram Direct. To update your video chat notifications, tap the gear icon on profile and find the new video chat control in Push Notifications.

Next, if you've ever scrolled through Instagram's Explore tab, you probably already know how cluttered and disorganized everything can get. Previously, Explore's 200 million daily users just saw a random mish-mash of popular content related to their interests, with just a single "Videos You Might Like" section separated. Going forward, it will be even easier for users to browse through posts and accounts.

According to Instagram, the new feature will allow users to more easily navigate the page because they will now see channels especially tailored to them. The For You section is the default, but there are also categories for sports, travel, nature, style, art, music and much more. You can mute the channels that don't interest you by long pressing on the channel and tapping on mute. So for example, after following Liza Koshy, there will be a new camera effect that places a mustache and thick eyebrows on you.

And lastly, Instagram has partnered with Ariana Grande, Buzzfeed, Liza Koshy, Baby Ariel, and the National Basketball Association to bring its users new camera effects. "Whether you want to make your friends laugh or add some glam to your selfies, you now have more ways to express yourself and feel closer to your favorite accounts".
