Porsche 919 Evo Nurburgring Record in Progress: Sets 5:19 Lap Time

Porsche 919 Evo officially laps the 'Ring in 5:19.5 smashing the lap record

Porsche's 919 Hybrid Evo has broken the Nürburgring-Nordschleife lap record, Timo Bernhard setting an astonishing 5:19.55 lap of the 20.8km-long German circuit this morning. The folks over at Bridge to Gantry have been following Porsche's progress with the unrestricted version of its race auto in the company's quest to establish a new record for the fastest vehicle around the 'Ring. "Thanks to the aerodynamic downforce, at sections I never imagined you can stay on full throttle", explained the 37-year-old Bernhard, who has won the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race five times.

Before quitting WEC, Porsche totally dominated the endurance championship with the 919 Hybrid, winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 2015, 2016 and 2017, the FIA World Endurance Championship three times in a row including the manufacturers' and drivers' titles. On May 28 in 1983, Stefan Bellof lapped the world-renowned track with a Porsche 956 C in a legendary time of 6:11.13 minutes. The engine drives the rear wheels, while the electric motor, powered by harvested brake and exhaust energy, drives the front axle to make it four-wheel drive. Now freed from the restrictions of the WEC, Porsche could maximize the potential of this vehicle.

For many however, the massive technological gap which exists between a Porsche 956 Group C auto and Porsche's modern hybrid machine means the record was always going to be beaten. Jani achieved a top speed of 359 km/h and an average speed of 245.61 km/h on his record lap.

The same vehicle beat Lewis Hamilton's qualifying lap record at Spa-Francorchamps earlier this year by 0.783s.

Even so, the 919 Evo still clocked mind-boggling speeds at various points on the circuit.
