The notes had a "similarity with the manner in which the eyes and mouths of the deceased were found taped and tied", the police said.

"They belong to the same family and used to practise spirituality", said Vinit Kumar, ADCP (North). Bhavnesh's wife Savita (48) and their three children-Meenu (23), Neetu (25) and Dhruv (15) were also found dead, police said, adding Lalit's wife Tina (42) along with their 15-year-old son Shivam was also among the dead.

Neighbours look out from a window near the building where 11 family members were found dead inside their home in the neighbourhood of Burari in New Delhi on July 1, 2018.

This angle was being investigated and a case of murder registered, the statement said.

A police statement said some handwritten notes were found in the house "which point towards observance of some definite spiritual/mystical practices by the whole family".

The family had been living in the house for more than two decades, the Hindustan Times reported.

Ten of the 11 people - two men, six women and two teens - were found hanging in the courtyard of the house.

The newspaper said that at around 8 a.m. Sunday, a neighbour with whom the businessman used to go for morning walks went to see him and found the door of the house open and the 10 people, including the businessman, hanging.

While police are yet to establish any connection between the two incidents, the investigation will consider all possible aspects, a senior police officer who is handling the gang war case told Reuters. He rushed out, raised an alarm and informed the police. "What I saw there left me shocked", said Gurcharan Singh, another neighbour.

Mr Thukral questioned whether the family had died by suicide.

"No father can kill his own son".

Calling it a mass murder, a media report said that it was an insider's job, who was under some tantrik's influence.

Police is now awaiting the post-mortem reports of the bodies, which would clear if one of the family members killed the rest and then committed suicide or was it a suicide pact.

Earlier in the day, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had reached the spot to take a stock of the situation.

Special commissioner of police Sandip Goyal and joint commissioner of police Rajesh Khurana also visited the scene.
