Facebook Bug Unblocks People on 800K+ Accounts

According to Facebook's statement on the matter, 83 percent of people affected by this bug had "only" one blocked person temporarily unblocked. It would, however, allow a blocked user to do things like contact you on Messenger, or try to re-add you as a friend. "For example, pictures shared with friends of friends", writes Facebook's chief privacy officer, Erin Egan. They would also have been able to send messages to the user, something a blocked person usually cannot do. According to the company, visible Facebook user data is stored in pairs called "associations".

"The bug was active between 29 May and 5 June - and while someone who was unblocked could not see content shared with friends, they could have seen things posted to a wider audience".

"We know that the ability to block someone is important - and we'd like to apologise".

Facebook has acknowledged a new bug that improperly tinkered with user settings - this time, a bug that affected more than 800,000 users and unblocked users that they'd blocked.

The social media giant apologized for the bug and assured users that it has already been dealt with. Users will be notified if the bug was linked to their accounts and will receive a Facebook notification "encouraging them to check their blocked list", the company said.

Facebook says the bug is now fixed, all previously blocked users are now blocked again, and those affected will be hearing from Facebook with an encouragement to check their block list.

"There are many reasons why people block another person on Facebook".

"Their relationship may have changed or they may want to take a break from someone posting content they find annoying".
