Google Gmail Inboxes Can Be Read by Software Developers

The outside app companies receive access to messages from Gmail users who signed up for things like price-comparison services or automated travel-itinerary planners, according to The Journal. Thompson said. "What you don't want is you don't want an app that you use to organize your inbox more efficiently which then sells your data to marketers or then sells it to hedge funds for investment decisions".

"We continuously work to vet developers and their apps that integrate with Gmail before we open them for general access, and we give both enterprise admins and individual consumers transparency and control over how their data is used."

"Some people might consider that to be a dirty secret", Mr Loder told the Wall Street Journal.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the tech giant continues to let hundreds of developers read people's emails. Users may be giving permission to these apps in one way or another, but it may not always be clear what permission you're granting.

Google has confirmed anyone who has linked third-party apps to their accounts may have unknowingly allowed third-party developers to read their private emails. Google and these developers need to assure us that they're taking every precaution to protect their users. Then, working on machines that prevented them from downloading information to other devices, they read the personal email messages of hundreds of users-with user information already redacted-along with the system's suggested replies, manually indicating whether each made sense.

The companies said they didn't ask users about reading their emails because such language is "covered" by their user agreements.

It's not news that Google and most of the other top email providers enable outside developers to access the inboxes of users.

"It might well be mentioned in there, but it's not what you would think of as reasonable, for a human being in a third-party company to be able to read your emails".

The revelation comes a year after Google announced it would stop scanning Gmail inboxes for information to personalize advertisements, claiming it wanted users to "remain confident that Google will keep privacy and security paramount". You should be on the safe side with Google apps, which would include apps like Chrome or Google Maps.

If you want to take a look, navigate to "Google Account", which should be in the top-right section of your Gmail screen on desktop.
