They'll have to do much better than that to take home the grand prize on the Fourth of July, however: last year's runner-up Carmen Cincotti downed 60 dogs, while ultimate champion Joey Chestnut consumed a whopping 72 in just ten minutes.

The competitive eater, a San Jose resident, will defend his Nathan's title at Coney Island on Wednesday, the Fourth of July.

Joey chowed down on a staggering 74 hot dogs in just 10 minutes, creating a new world record. Yes, it's time for another Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest. Last year, he almost equaled that mark with 72 dogs. Chestnut is now the most decorated hot dog eater in the sport.

As crowds donning hot dog hats packed Coney Island, Chestnut alternated between shoving two hot dogs and two buns into his mouth for the duration of the competition.

On the women's side, Miki Sudo won her fifth straight title, beating Michelle Lesco and Juliet Lee by gulping down 37 hot dogs.

According to Nathan's website, on July 4, 1916, four immigrants gathered at this hot dog stand and made the eating contest's history.

The renowned competitive eater from San Jose, California, takes home the coveted Mustard Belt and surpassed the previous mark of 72 dogs and buns he downed a year ago.

"I doubt we can put the microchip on the tongue or in the esophagus", Shea said. The judges determined the counters missed a plate and, after a lengthy review, ruled that Chestnut ate 74.

It's Chestnut's 11th time winning the competition. Women's victor Miki Sudo also took home $10,000.

Since the first recorded contest in 1972, a total of 1,509 Nathan's Famous beef hot dogs have been eaten by participants.
