Protesters sing and chant outside of President Trump rally in Great Falls

Sen. Jon Tester speaks at a hearing on Capitol Hill in 2016

Sen. Jon Tester speaks at a hearing on Capitol Hill in 2016

A local NBC affiliate reports that about 200 people gathered outside the rally in Great Falls. "East Coast developer Matt Rosendale is only looking out for himself and whatever out-of-state special interest group that is propping up his campaign with cash". "And I said, 'You know, Angela, I can't guarantee it, but we're protecting you and it means a lot more to you than protecting us 'cause I don't know how much protection we get by protecting you". Jon Tester is vulnerable and has earned the ire of the Trump White House for his character assassination of Rear Admiral Ronny Jackson.

'I said to him I feel guilty, ' Trump said he told Jackson. Tester is one of ten Democrats up for re-election this year in states Trump won. He won the state by 20 points in 2016.

Tester tried to counter that narrative before Trump got to the state by taking out a full-page ad in more than a dozen newspapers across the state thanking him for signing 16 bills the Democrat sponsored or co-sponsored.

Normally, I go through the transcript of Trump's speeches to pick out 30 or 40 (or 50) of the most eye-popping lines, the sentences that stood out most to me for whatever reason.

'He actually said I was healthy.

"I don't believe them at all. He's an outstanding man", Trump added. "Pocahontas, I apologize to you, to you I'll apologize".

As the crowd cheered and pounded on the bleachers during the roughly 70-minute speech at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, Trump embellished on his favorite exaggerations and falsehoods, including his margin of victory in the Electoral College, the country's trade deficits and crowd size. "A rally in October is probably more meaningful than any rally in July", Johnson said, though he noted that Trump's appearance would certainly draw enthusiasm from supporters he needs to turn up in November. How vicious is the world?

"But John Tester said things about him that were disgusting and that were not true".

The president once again promised to appoint a justice to replace the retiring Supreme Court justice Anthony Kennedy.

"You'll be extremely happy with this selection - and they're all great", Trump said.

The president criticized Tester's voting record, which included opposition to the Republican tax overhaul and Trump's judicial nominees, a critique later offset by his praise of "landmark" veterans legislation that Tester pushed for. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., last week, labeling her a "liberal" though she is considered a moderate and one of the least reliably partisan Democratic votes in the Senate. "Tester opposed many of our awesome judges".

Trump then disparaged the Me Too movement - raising some eyebrows, but drawing laughter from the friendly audience. Mr. Trump said Kennedy had chose to leave the High Court because he knew the president would pick a stellar replacement. "Meantime, she's based her life on being a minority", Trump continued. Trump's message would influence his decision, he said.

"They say stay away from that word, especially since he's done nothing wrong".

The Tester campaign also planned a statewide radio ad campaign to run through the weekend touting his bills that Trump has signed.

Tester told KPAX-TV he didn't watch the rally but was glad that the president had visited the state.

"I'm glad that the president has signed 16 of my bills", Tester said, pointing to one measure created to improve accountability at the VA.

"He will fight for you", he said of Rosendale.
