This now marks the last in the triumvirate of films that Marvel had slated for 2018, capping off what's been the biggest year for the studio to date. Also releasing this week, Universal and Blumhouse's The First Purge is the latest success in the now, four-film franchise, Roadside's documentary Whitney fell just shy of a spot in the weekend top ten and Annapurna's Sorry to Bother You was a smashing success in limited release. In North America, the tentpole starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly earned $76 million, making it the 20th consecutive Marvel film to open No. 1 at the box office.

Looking at the box office as a whole, the Ant-Man sequel bested Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, pushing them into the number-two and number-three spots with $29 million and $28.6 million, respectively.

One interesting caveat to the film's domestic performance, however, is just how big the film's Friday was compared to the rest of the weekend.

But where does "Ant-Man and the Wasp" place in the pantheon?

What did you think of Ant-Man and the Wasp? While the gender demographics are relatively similar to the first Ant-Man, the audience for the sequel did skew a bit older, as 48% of the overall audience for the first film was age 25 or older.

With $161 million in ticket sales and an 86 percent rating at Rotten Tomatoes, Ant-Man and The Wasp did what a good sequel should do by improving over the original.

That is a robust 33% jump from the debut of the original "Ant-Man", which opened to $57 million and went on to collect $180 million at the domestic box office in July 2015. Highlights include an impressive $20.9 million opening in South Korea followed by Mexico ($6.7m), Indonesia ($5.6m), Russian Federation ($4.9m), Australia ($4.7m), Taiwan ($4.6m), Hong Kong ($3.6m), Brazil ($3.5m), Philippines ($3.1m), Malaysia ($3.0m), Thailand ($3.0m). Over the next few weeks, rollout continues in Korea, Japan, Spain, Italy, and Germany.

"Incredibles 2" opened in France with $9.9 million, marking the second highest opening for a Pixar release behind "Finding Nemo". Internationally, Incredibles 2 has made US$269 million. As per last weekend, the worldwide estimates are not available at this time.

Universal and Amblin Entertainment's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" scored $27.6 million from 86 worldwide territories. The global opening marks a strong 45% increase over the worldwide debut of Ant-Man, and it managed to put up these solid numbers without the help of a release in China, the second largest box office market in the world. The horror prequel was only able to rake in $17 million. This still comes at the low end of expectations for the film that ranged from $80-95 million.
