The accused, Mukesh Singh, Vinay Sharma, Akshay Thakur, and Pawan Gupta, along with two others, brutally beat, tortured, and raped a 23-year-old paramedical student, Jyoti Singh, on a moving bus, before leaving her bleeding on the side of the road late in the night.

On May 04, the Supreme Court had reserved its order on the review petition filed by the convicts, Pawan, Vinay and Mukesh, in the brutal December 16 gang rape and murder case. A review petition can not be used to re-argue the matter, justice Bhushan said. "Even after today, they can still appeal further, so we don't know how long we will have to fight".

A lawyer for the men, A.P. Singh, told reporters at the courthouse after the verdict that "injustice" had been done to the convicted murderers - using the Hindi word for "boys" to describe them - and the court had caved to public and political pressure to uphold the death penalty.

The victim's parents on Monday welcomed the ruling, with her mother Asha Singh saying it was "very happy news". However, the convicts still have judicial redressal for a re-examination of the dismissal of their appeals and review pleas by way of a curative petition, which is the last legal remedy left for curing the defects, if any, in a judgment. Another convict, Ram Singh, allegedly committed suicide in his cell in Tihar jail. A juvenile in conflict with the law was tried by a special court and has already served three years in a reform home.

The brutal crime had sparked widespread protests and drew global attention over violence against women in India.

The apex court in its 2017 verdict had upheld the capital punishment awarded to them by the Delhi High Court and the trial court in the case of gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old paramedic student on December 16, 2012 here. She had succumbed to injuries on December 29, 2012 at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

According to National Crime Records Bureau data for 2016, incidents of rape of children in India increased by over 82 percent compared with 2015, when almost 35,000 rape cases were reported to the police. "Instead, the government must allocate adequate resources for the effective implementation of laws, improve conviction rates and ensure certainty of justice in all cases", Asmita Basu, Amnesty International India's Programmes director, said.
