Fernando Hierro has quit his role as Spain's national team head coach following La Furia Roja's Second Round exit at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation.

The president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF) said on Monday "it is probable" that a new national team coach would be announced later in the day.

Luis Enrique has replaced Fernando Hierro, who stepped down as interim coach over the weekend.

The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) have scheduled a news conference on Monday to announce changes to the organisation's structure.

The former Barcelona manager, who was favoured ahead of the other candidates Quique Sánchez Flores y Michel, will be officially presented as new head coach of the national setup in the coming days.

Luis Enrique, who previously managed Roma and Celta Vigo, won two La Liga titles, three Copa del Rey trophies and one Champions League during his three-year spell in charge of Barcelona.

Of the starting XI against Russian Federation, only Marco Asensio will be younger than 30 by the time the next World Cup comes around.

"Luis Enrique's appointment as coach for the next two years was approved unanimously".

He has been out of work since leaving Barça last summer but has since been linked with Chelsea and Arsenal before Unai Emery filled the vacancy left by Arsène Wenger.

"Luis Enrique comes with his staff, but he will talk about that next week".

The former Barcelona boss will lead La Roja into a new era after the hugely disappointing World Cup campaign.

The former Spain global has also turned down the option to return to his previous role of sports director.
