Tropical Storm Chris brings drier air to Middle Georgia

Tropical storm Chris is now positioned 215 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, N.C., The Washington Post reports, but is forecast to reach hurricane strength by 8 a.m. on Tuesday (July 10).

Increased swells were expected for the coasts of North Carolina and mid-Atlantic states, with the warning: “These swells could case life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.”. Tropical storm force winds were extending outward up to 70 miles, the center said.

As the storm intensifies and moves towards hurricane status, seas along the coast of North Carolina and neighbouring coastal states will become rough.

Don't panic. The National Hurricane Center says Chris, the third named storm of 2018 in the Atlantic, won't come onshore here but turn and head away from the U.S.

'Additional weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, especially once Beryl reaches the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday, ' the NHC said.

Meteorologist Marshall Alexander told The Associated Press that officials were anxious about those living with tarps on their roofs after Maria slammed into Dominica as a Category 5 storm previous year, killing dozens of people.

Beryl is no more than an area of disorganized showers and storms this morning, but it will bring rain to the Virgin Islands and parts of Puerto Rico later today.

More than nine months after Hurricane Maria, about 1,500 people in Puerto Rico are without power on the island; about 60,000 have only tarps for roofs.

Barbadians can breathe a sigh of relief, as the island is no longer under Tropical Storm Watch.

Dominica Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit had warned people to respect an island-wide curfew and remain indoors. "Hence the tropical storm watch for Barbados has been discontinued", the Barbados Met Office said last this morning. Though the storm poses no threat to the US, it will cause strong rip currents along the east coast. The storm's center was expected to pass just south of the island. It was expected to remain nearly stationary over the next few days before growing to hurricane force and moving to the northeast.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued an advisory saying the storm was expected to strengthen into a hurricane by Monday night.
