Fifth boy brought out of Thai cave on second day of rescue says official

One of the boys appeared to have lung inflammation, and another was admitted with a slowed heart rate but both are improving, said Dr. Jedsada Chokedamrongsook, the permanent secretary of the Thai Health Ministry.

Underscoring the danger behind the mission, Ivan Karadzic said, "They are diving in something considered an extremely hazardous environment".

Another four were rescued on Monday and the last four boys and the coach were brought out on Tuesday, prompting rounds of spontaneous applause as ambulances and helicopters passed. Four boys and the coach are still deep inside, and authorities have indicated they're continuing with their so-far successful effort to bring the boys out guided by experienced divers. The hospital has sent test samples from the boys to a lab in Bangkok.

Doctors were being cautious because of the infection risk and were isolating the boys in the hospital. "They walk from chamber three to mouth of the cave".

Wearing surgical masks, wet suits and sunglasses to shield their eyes from the bright emergency floodlights, scuba gear dangling from their wastes, the fearless four struck a pose at the mouth of the Tham Luang Nang Non cave for a quick snapshot after the life-saving mission was complete.

Chiang Rai Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, who is heading the rescue effort, said earlier that Tuesday's operation began just after 10 a.m. and involved 19 divers.

Manchester United has invited the Thai soccer team rescued from a cave after 17 days underground to a match at Old Trafford this season.

The boys, who range in age from 11 to 16, and Ekapol Chanthawong, 25, were exploring the cave system in Chiang Rai after a practice game on June 23, when monsoon rains flooded the entrance. Last week, Musk sent engineers from two of his companies, SpaceX and Boring Co., to assist Thai officials in the rescue effort, which comprises a large team of global diving, engineering and medical experts, among other professionals.

After days of planning, the first four boys emerged Sunday after an arduous journey. Each boy was escorted out by two divers through winding tunnels as narrow as 15 inches wide. Each operation has taken at least nine hours.

Parts of the cave's narrow pathways are submerged with water and the journey is extremely unsafe for all involved. Some of them do not even know how to swim.

Technology billionaire Elon Musk went into the cave on Monday and left the rescue team with a "kid-sized" submarine his company SpaceX had built, Thailand's interior Minister Anupong Paochinda said.

Asked at a news conference in Bangkok if the boys had been sedated, Prayuth said: "Who would chloroform them?"
