Netflix Introduces Smart Downloads

Once you connect to your office WiFi, Netflix will delete the episodes you've already watched and seamlessly download the next one in the background.

Netflix resisted downloads for years, banking on the idea that streaming accessibility would eventually reach the point that downloading to watch offline wouldn't be necessary anymore. But the problem with the feature as it stood was that you had to manually download each episode in a series. That's where smart downloading comes in. The feature is now available on Android phones and tablets running the latest iteration of the Netflix application. However, this has been a limited trial for a small percentage of users across the globe, with the feature rolling out universally for all Netflix users on the Android platform from today. It will hit Android smartphones and tablets first, and iOS devices later. The feature will then automatically download the next episode, so users won't have to do it themselves.

Netflix wants to start keeping your downloads fresh for you.

The ability to download movies and TV shows straight from Netflix mobile app is a very handy feature. Episodes that are slightly longer won't take up more storage space, Netflix says, because of the way Netflix encodes, or converts the video, for mobile.

This works even if you have more than one episode downloaded, as well. The feature has allowed it to better serve its users in Latin America and Asia where the younger audience simply prefers to download content on their device so that they can view it later on.
