The Senate is looking grim for Democrats this year

Rather, he draws from his experience working for independent counsel Ken Starr, whose zealous investigation of Bill Clinton resulted in a recommendation for impeachment, and as a top aide in the Bush White House to make the case that Congress should pass a law excusing the president from criminal prosecution and investigation while in office.

Tennessee's senators were complimentary of President Trump's pick for the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday night, but they withheld explicit support.

Over the weekend, it looked like Judge Kavanaugh's star may have been fading, that perhaps he had too-close ties to the Bush family for Mr Trump's liking.

Trump has previously said he wanted "pro-life" justices opposed to abortion rights.

Kavanaugh's nomination could establish a 5-4 conservative majority on the court - which could shape legal decisions for generations to come. During that time, he developed broad views on executive power.

Liberals plan to paint Kavanaugh as an extremist who can not be trusted, because of the process through which he was chosen, which included being part of a preapproved list drawn up for Trump during the campaign.

Many conservatives are disappointed that President Donald Trump did not nominate Amy Coney Barrett or Sen.

Trump said that Kavanaugh has "impeccable credentials" and is "universally regarded as one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time".

During Trump's presidential campaign, he emphasized that he would appoint conservative justices to the Supreme Court bench if he was elected. The court could also be called upon to render judgment on issues of personal significance to Trump and his administration including matters arising from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing Russia-related investigation and several civil lawsuits pending against Trump.

Some Republicans have expressed concern that Kavanaugh's extensive record on various critical cases could give ammunition for opponents to delay the confirmation process or scuttle the nomination.

He added that the last two Supreme Court nominees - one from Trump and one from President Barack Obama - went from nomination to confirmation in 66 days.

A group of Democratic senators from Republican-leaning states - lawmakers who could be pivotal in the confirmation fight - declined Trump's invitation to attend the White House announcement.

If NBC's report is true, it means Kennedy would effectively have been given control over a SCOTUS seat for 60 years - the 30 years he served, and the 30 or so the 53-year-old Kavanaugh will likely serve on the court if confirmed. "That's not happening. A new Axios/SurveyMonkey poll of key states shows Dems would lose three of those red-state seats while picking up two GOP seats - still short of the majority". Trump signed Kavanaugh's nomination papers Monday evening in the White House residence.

This issue may not get as much buzz as abortion or health care, but it's probably the one that's directly relevant to Trump. The Judicial Crisis Network, which describes itself as "dedicated to strengthening liberty and justice" and is committed to "limited government", has already purchased a $1.4 million ad campaign on national cable and digital TV, and on stations in Alabama, Indiana, North Dakota, and West Virginia, featuring an introductory bio spot about the nominee. He works for the Washington-based lobbying firm Covington & Burling. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania.

Groups that support abortion rights are planning a "Day of Action" for August 26, the anniversary of the 1920 adoption of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. Some noted that the crowd in front of the Supreme Court building had gotten very hostile at times after the announcement. "His own writings make clear that he would rule against reproductive rights and freedoms, and that he would welcome challenges to the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act".
