North Korea on Saturday lashed out at what it called "rapacious" U.S. demands, just hours after the conclusion of what Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had called "productive" talks.

NORTH Korea has called high-level talks with a United State delegation led by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "extremely regrettable", contradicting Washington's account of how the meeting in Pyongyang went.

The United States maintains some 28,500 servicemembers in South Korea, which remains technically at war with the North after the three-year conflict ended in an armistice instead of a peace treaty.

5 - Pompeo has highlighted how much economic benefit Vietnam has seen by cooperating with the USA and how North Korea could also follow suit. USA news accounts in recent days have shown pictures of what is said to be the expansion of nuclear-related buildings in North Korea.

Pompeo downplayed a harshly critical North Korean statement after the talks in which the country's foreign ministry bashed hopes for a quick deal and attacked the USA for making unreasonable and extortionate demands aimed at forcing it to abandon nuclear weapons.

Pompeo had hoped during his recent visit to Pyongyang to press North Korea to work toward a timetable to end its nuclear program and come up with details of how verification of that can be carried out.

Another smart play would be to use the upcoming North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit as an opportunity for a full-throated joint message to Kim that if he wants to continue to travel and meet world leaders, then he needs to commit to abandoning all nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles or face further sanctions.

During the trilateral meeting in Tokyo, Kono thanked Pompeo for that, a senior Foreign Ministry official said later on Sunday.

Today President Trump said he is confident Kim will ultimately honor the contract they signed in Singapore, but is watching China's behavior behind the scenes.

"These are complicated issues, but we made progress on nearly all of the central issues", said Pompeo.

"We had detailed and substantive discussions about the next steps towards a fully verified and complete denuclearization".

"It's certainly a setback and a change of heart and a very different picture coming from the North Korean side".

Trump had previously linked China's cooperation on pressuring North Korea to the bilateral trade relationship, saying in an interview in December that "I have been soft on China because the only thing more important to me than trade is war".

Richard Haass, president of the Council on Foreign Relations, said on Twitter there was a danger of military action because Trump might now say he had tried diplomacy but was betrayed by Kim.
