Conricus said that after the drone was destroyed by a single Patriot missile, its remains landed near the Sea of Galilee.

The incident took place as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Moscow to stress to Russian President Vladimir Putin that Israel will not tolerate an Iranian military presence in Syria.

That episode triggered a massive Israeli bombardment of Iranian military installations in Syria, fueling tensions that exploded in another round of rockets and counter-strikes later in the year.

He said the UAV had been tracked long before it entered Israel, flying through both Jordanian and Syrian air space.

This is the second time in a month that Israel has intercepted a drone flying in from Syria.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told Russian Federation on Wednesday that Israel would not seek to topple Syrian President Bashar al-Assad but that Moscow, his key ally, should encourage Iranian forces to quit Syria, a senior Israeli official said.

The Israeli army confirmed that it struck the Syrian targets in response to a Syrian drone that infiltrated Israeli airspace earlier on Wednesday. "The IDF will not allow any violation of Israeli airspace and will act against any attempt to hurt its civilians".

Russia, another top key ally of Assad, has warned it would be unrealistic to expect Iran to fully withdraw from the country.

Meanwhile, Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, also left for Moscow on Wednesday for a meeting with Putin.

Israel has largely stayed out of the fighting in Syria but it has carried out dozens of airstrikes on alleged arms shipments bound for the militant group Hezbollah.

Israel is particularly anxious about the presence of Damascus ally Iran next door in Syria.

Israel, which captured the Golan Heights from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war, has largely stayed out of the current conflict.
