US President Donald Trump congratulates his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee is kicking his closed-door meetings with senators into high gear Wednesday, all as the parameters of the fight over his nomination start to settle in around him.

"With his pick of Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump has done everything in his power to push the Supreme Court into the world of ultra-conservatism", said Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum. Shortly after, Democrats said they would not support this nominee. The South Carolina Republican said afterward that the days of a more balanced court are over with Kavanaugh's nomination pushing it in a more conservative direction.

Republicans have a 51-49 majority in the Senate.

If confirmed by the Senate, Brett Kavanaugh would replace Anthony Kennedy, the justice he clerked for 25 years ago.

However, the news of this endorsement was undermined by another letter signed by Kavanaugh's fellow alumnus of Yale Law School. Susan Collins (R-ME) signaled she's not opposed to Kavanaugh.

"And I would say being very strict on interpretation of the Constitution and things like that, that's what impresses me, that's what ought to impress most people, because that's what the Constitution writers meant was that judges were supposed to interpret law", he added.
