Alaska’s Blockbuster video stores closing, leaving just one left

The owner of the Alaska stores had told Deadline that the stores remained profitable, but decided that renewing the lease on the stores didn't make financial sense.

"We regret to inform our customers that Blockbuster Video will be closing both the College and Debarr stores starting July 16th", read a note from Blockbuster Alaska District Manager Kelli Vey and General Manager Kevin Daymude. We have thought of you as family for the past 28 years.

"Thank you for sticking by us throughout all these years", the post continued.

"It's always kind of a kick in the trousers every time we close a store", explained Payne. That lucky honor goes to a store in Bend, Oregon.

Two months ago the show sent a jockstrap worn by Russell Crowe in the 2005 movie "Cinderella Man" and other items to an Anchorage store, which displayed it in an effort to ramp up business.

"We have a great customer base", he said, "and it kills us to tell these customers that we're having to close down". There, they built a shrine to the actor with such props as a hood from Robin Hood and a Vest from Les Miserables.

Comedian John Oliver actually tried to save the struggling Alaska Blockbusters this past April in a amusing campaign that included Russell Crowe's jock strap. Despite modern technology rendering the stores obsolete, a handful have managed to survive in the US.

The Blockbuster company filed for bankruptcy in 2010, and most of its stores shuttered soon after. One notable North Pole resident, a man legally named Santa Claus, commented that he was "sad that the North Pole Blockbuster is closing". Not that its legacy was purely benevolent; when Blockbuster came to my town in New Jersey, it systematically put most of the local video stores out of business, and some of them were bigger and had better selections. The sale will continue until August, or until everything is sold out. And there's just not enough incentive to keep it going.

According to Statista, Netflix now has around 125 million subscribers worldwide.
