In June, Kellogg said it was investigating the third-party manufacturer that produces Honey Smacks after it was contacted by the FDA and CDC about the illness. "Additionally, the public is urged to report any product being offered for sale to the FDA Consumer Complaint Coordinator in their region".

The CDC says regardless of the expiration date the cereal should be thrown away immediately or returned for a refund.

Additionally, if you stored the tainted cereal in any kind of a reusable container you'll need to wash and sanitize that container before you use it again.

The CDC reports that the first known victim became sick on March 3.

"Fifty-five (85 percent) of 65 people interviewed reported eating cold cereal".

According to the FDA, the ages of those affected range from less than one year to 95 (median 57 years) and 68% of cases are female. The company has recalled the cereal, and consumers and retailers are being advised to get rid of it.

Laboratory testing also identified the outbreak strain in samples of leftover Kellogg's Honey Smacks cereal collected from the homes of ill people in Montana, New York, and Utah, the FDA reported.

The CDC says at least 30 of the people infected in the outbreak have been hospitalized. In these patients, the Salmonellainfection may spread from the intestines to the blood stream and then to other body sites and can cause death unless the person is treated promptly with antibiotics. While most recover within a week, some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.
