Tesla Shares Fall After Elon Musk's 'Pedo' Twitter Comment

A British cave diver involved in the rescue of 12 Thai football players and their coach said he would consider taking legal action against Elon Musk after the Tesla Inc. and SpaceX chief executive suggested on Twitter that the diver was a paedophile.

Elon Musk calls British diver who helped rescue Thai schoolboys "pedo guy" in Twitter outburst.

On Monday, Vernon Unsworth told the Guardian that he was "astonished and very angry" after hearing of Musk's tweets.

The rift between the two men started when Unsworth said the small submarine that Musk delivered to the cave site had no chance of working, calling it a "PR stunt".

Musk, who serves as Tesla's CEO, came under fire over the weekend after he called out Unsworth on Twitter for comments he made during an interview with CNN.

Musk's comments were a response to an Business Insider interview with Unsworth on Sunday. And then there are CEOs like Musk and John Legere of T-Mobile who favor using bombast and bickering and flamethrowers, figurative and literal, to prop up their personal and corporate brands.

Whether it's investors betting against his stock or reporters or analysts who ask tough questions, Elon Musk has fought back, often around the clock on Twitter.

Unsworth said he hadn't flatly denied Musk's accusation because he was waiting for legal advice.

A spokesman for Stanton later told The New York Times that the cave proved to be too narrow for the submarine. Now, the diver says he might sue.

Though Musk later deleted the tweet, he also later tweeted out another now-deleted message saying he'd bet a signed dollar that his claim of pedophilia was correct.

In the tweets he only referred to Unsworth as the "British expat guy who lives in Thailand".

Much like other public figures (cough, Donald Trump, cough), Musk has a reputation for tweeting first and thinking after.

"He's an inspiration to so many by virtue of some extremely clever PR over the years and needs to remember that he is a role model", Holland said.

Wall Street Journal columnist Charley Grant tweeted that Republicans in Congress could vote to extend Tesla's full credits.

Musk's posts on Twitter sparked backlash from shareholders and Silicon Valley analysts, who called his behavior immature and an impediment to the auto company's success.

"It's not finished", Unsworth told the Australian news media on Monday, adding that Musk's insult meant "people realize what kind of guy he is".

Shares of Tesla Inc fell more than 3.5 percent on Monday, knocking nearly $2 billion off the company's market value.

He said he had no contact with Musk throughout the rescue operation nor since. "I will correct it", added the CEO showing humility and self-awareness.
