Taylor Swift Jennifer Hudson cast in'Cats movie adaptation

Hudson, who made her Broadway debut in the recent revival of The Color Purple, will take on the role of Grizabella, but the roles that Swift, Corden, and McKellen have been tapped for have not yet been announced. Weber adapted it from one of T.S. Eliot's books of children's poems, and created memorable feline characters such as Grizabella, the cat down on her luck, and Old Deuteronomy, the ancient cat respected by even humans.

[The film tells] the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make what is known as "the Jellicle choice" and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life... There's no word on when exactly this one will dance and sing its way into cinemas, but with this cast and Hooper behind the camera it could be looking at an Oscar-friendly late 2019 / early 2020 launch.

Ian McKellen, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson and Taylor Swift to star in Cats movie.

Britain's Tom Hooper, whose past credits include Oscar best picture "The King's Speech" and musical "Les Miserables", will direct the movie, which is due to begin shooting in Britain in November, Variety said.

"Cats", composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and featuring the classic musical ballad "Memory", opened in London in 1981 and originally was staged on Broadway from 1982 to 2000, the fourth-longest run in history.

Cat lover Swift's last film role was in 2014's The Giver.
