John Bolton Says North Korea Hasn't Done Much To Rid Itself Of Nuclear Weapons

"However, the USA responded to our expectation by inciting worldwide sanctions and pressure against the DPRK", it said in a statement carried by KCNA news agency.

He continued to note that the USA has no current plans to relax sanctions on North Korea until there is evidence the country is taking steps to denuclearize, saying the Trump administration would continue its campaign of "maximum pressure".

Trump has hailed North Korea's moves since his historic summit with leader Kim Jong Un during a summit in Singapore in June, where the US agreed to provide unspecified security guarantees in exchange for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

North Korean Foreign Minister Ri travelled this week to Iran, where President Hassan Rowhani told him the United States could not be trusted after the Trump administration reneged on a 2015 deal to lift sanctions in return for curbs on Iran's own nuclear programme.

It continued: "Now, the issue in question is that going against the intention of President Trump to advance the DPRK - US relations, some high level officials within the US administration are making baseless allegations against us and making desperate attempts at intensifying the global sanctions and pressure".

The North Korean statement followed comments this week by top American diplomats stressing the need for Pyongyang to take additional steps toward denuclearization.

The United States is "not willing to wait for too long" for North Korea to take steps toward denuclearization, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Wednesday.

Earlier this month, August 3, the United States mission to the UN submitted proposals to the UN Security Council suggesting new sanctions against North Korea.

The inter-Korean meeting on Monday will be held at Tongilgak, a North Korean-controlled building in the border village of Panmunjom.

It wasn't clear when another inter-Korean summit might happen, but if the April 27 summit agreements between Moon and Kim are followed through on, the leaders will likely meet in Pyongyang in the next couple of months.

Declaring an end to the Korean War is "the demand of our time" and will be the "first process" toward a peace and security guarantee, the Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of the Workers' Party of Korea, said in a commentary.

Bolton said just last month that the country could dismantle all of its nuclear weapons "in a year", a far more ambitious timeline than that proposed by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, but experts have remained skeptical.
