Two Virginia state troopers also died in the crash of their helicopter during the events. There are no official far-right protests planned in town this weekend, but the city's downtown area has been closed to traffic, and the University of Virginia, where hundreds of white supremacists marched with flaming torches previous year, is restricting access to parts of its campus. "Virginia continues to mourn the three Virginians who lost their lives in the course of the demonstrations a year ago".

"We acted in advance of last year's horrific event in Charlottesville and if we become aware of similar information we won't hesitate to do so again".

The Virginia state of emergency will mobilize and fund state resources from the state Department of Emergency Management, Virginia State Police, Department of health, National Guard and other agencies. On Wednesday, Virginia's governor declared a state of emergency to help coordinate planning and response to the anniversary weekend.

Other businesses have taken similar approaches and have said they will deny services to attendees of the Unite the Right rally.

U.Va. was the scene of a torch-lit march the night before the first Unite the Right rally previous year, where hundreds of white nationalists, carrying Tiki torches, gathered at the rotunda and surrounded a group of counterprotesters around the Jefferson statue.

The city is closing downtown streets and public parks and restricting access to a downtown "security area", where visitors are prohibited from wearing masks or carrying certain items, including skateboards, catapults, glass bottles, bats and knives.

"Nothing would excite us any better than for this to be noneventful and folks to go home and it be a peaceful weekend for all", Settle said.

"The statue itself is symbolic of a lot of larger issues", Kessler said past year.

Officials, who are expecting "anywhere from one to 400" participants in "Unite the Right", admitted that the white supremacists could spontaneously change their march route from the Foggy Bottom Metro station - at George Washington University, which is locking down its campus that day - to the White House.
