Jose Mourinho: Every Premier League match will be tough this season

Premier League clubs' net player transfer expenditure to 9 August was £865m, well in excess of the £665m for the summer 2017 transfer window.

Leicester showed that even without Riyad Mahrez, who has joined Manchester City, they remain a team with plenty of creativity.

In England the highest-spending clubs were Liverpool (£165 million), Chelsea (£120 million), Fulham (£105 million) and Leicester City (£100 million), who made up about 40% of the aggregate gross player transfer expenditure by Premier League clubs.

Mourinho has repeatedly expressed a desire to bring in additional signings throughout pre-season with a central defender top of his list.

The Red Devils were the closest challengers to record-breaking rivals Manchester City in 2017-18, but still finished some 19 points off the pace.

"It's not about adding because it's fashionable to sign players", Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino said on Thursday.

"Obviously, it's important to win and play well". Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen, Son Heung-min and Kieran Trippier have all signed new contracts since May.

Tottenham Hotspurs was the only team in the league to not have signed any player in the current transfer window. We gave our best, it was a hard team against a great team. Klopp landed Roma goalkeeper Alisson Becker for £66 million and paid £52 million for RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita.

Fabinho and Naby Keita (below) will add extra dynamism and depth to the midfield, while Xherdan Shaqiri offers better back-up to the prolific front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Pep Guardiola, meanwhile, starts his third season at the Etihad Stadium on the back of a record-winning Premier League season with much focus being on retaining the title and improving on their underwhelming Champions League campaign from last season.

Hired to replace the sacked Antonio Conte, Blues manager Maurizio Sarri insists he is happy to leave the wheeling and dealing to Chelsea's hierarchy - a stark contrast to his predecessor's constant complaints about transfers.

Worringly for Everton, Richarlison was eventually forced off by injury.

When it became obvious to Real Madrid that Neymar was not keen on a possible move to the Santiago Bernabeu from present French club, Paris St.Germain, the Spanish club turned their attention to Eden Hazard.

Arsenal boss Unai Emery has shared his ambitious plan to win the Premier League title ahead of welcoming champions Manchester City to the Emirates on Sunday.
