Ronaldo then took to his own official account on Sunday to reassure supporters and those who had sent him well-wishes, however, while confirming the trip to hospital was true.

Staff at both hospitals refused to give an update on the 41-year-old's health for privacy reasons when contacted by Diario de Ibiza.

Former Brazil and Barcelona striker Ronaldo is reportedly in intensive care after contracting pneumonia in Ibiza.

The newspaper's sources said the ex-footballer was still in intensive care, but was making good progress. No further information is now available about his condition.

Ronaldo, regarded as one of the world's best-ever players, owns a house in Ibiza and is a regular visitor to the party island, which has always been hugely popular with Brits. He is thought to have arrived on the island a few days ago before his illness started.

His full name is Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima.

Symptoms - which include a cough and difficulty breathing - can develop suddenly over 24 to 48 hours.

In his later years he battled with overweight because of a thyroid problem.

The crowning achievement of his career was his display in the World Cup final in 2002.

He scored 62 goals in 98 games for Brazil, as well as being a prolific scorer for some of Europe's elite clubs.

Here's hoping that he can make a speedy recovery.
