Five Things We Learned As Liverpool Easily See Off West Ham

Jurgen Klopp declared Liverpool's 4-0 victory over West Ham United in their opening game of the Premier League season as a "very good start" but "not ideal".

The game featured the debuts of Alisson Becker in goal, and Naby Keita in the midfield.

The Reds boss chose to reference the plot of Rocky IV in his response to how his side would go about bridging last season's 25-point deficit to Pep Guardiola's side.

"It was not a flawless start but really good and we extended a really good pre-season into the Premier League", he said. 'It is good that people are positive, but this season will be unbelievably hard.

Klopp has tried to keep a lid on expectations given the gap to City last season despite spending a reported £170 million.

"We can not be anything different than the challenger because we haven't won anything since I came in". I would expect us to perhaps sit deep (as most underdogs would) and narrow, limiting the space in behind and between the lines for Liverpool to create chances. West Ham will need to regroup and continue to familiarise themselves with new faces before targeting their first win under Manuel Pellegrini when they host Bournemouth on Saturday.

He had little to call on when Salah had to go off injured in the Champions League final against Real Madrid last season.

And Daniel Sturridge, with what was essentially his first touch of the ball after entering the fray as a late substitute added insult to injury with just two minutes of normal time remaining when he added a fourth to give the scoreline a comprehensive look and one that Liverpool probably deserved, such was their dominance.

Yet, he was given the simplest of tasks to tap home the opener into an empty net on 19 minutes from Andy Robertson's pinpoint cross after he was freed down the left by the impressive Keita.

Trent Alexander-Arnold almost doubled the lead five minutes later but West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski pushed his free kick away from the near post.

Klopp, whose longtime number two Zeljko Buvac left abruptly towards the end of last term, fell back one of his favourite analogies saying Liverpool were Sylvester Stallone's fictional boxer Rocky Balboa rather than his Soviet opponent Ivan Drago.

Sadio Mane was a whisker away from a telling contact with Georginio Wijnaldum's diagonal ball, while James Milner's pinpoint centre eluded Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino as the home side looked for a ideal start. And from the Reds' representatives, the likes of Roberto Firmino (Brazil), Sadio Mane (Senegal) and, crucially, Mo Salah (Egypt) had relatively short campaigns. West Ham supporters have been extremely frustrated with the lack of investment since moving to the London Stadium and finally, our prayers seem to have been answered with approximately £100m being splashed out this summer.

"We did not reach anything yet, we have been in finals and if we get there again we should try to win it".
