Tensions have been high between Canada and Saudi Arabia since Monday when Riyadh expelled Canada's ambassador, recalled its own envoy and froze all new trade and investments.

"Canadians expect that, and indeed people around the world expect that leadership from Canada", he said.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Dr. Mohammed Faisal has said that Pakistan was following with enormous concern the "crisis" in relations between Saudi Arabia and Canada, and also that Pakistan, "places on record its solidarity with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia".

"When it comes specifically to the relations between Canada and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, we have been following the developments in diplomatic relations between the two", she said.

Later in the day, Çavuşoğlu spoke to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres over the phone, diplomatic sources said, without sharing any further details.

Saudi Arabia's move had a brief impact on the Canadian dollar, with the loonie depreciating as much as 0.5 percent to CA$1.3120 per US dollar Wednesday after the Financial Times reported the Saudi central bank and state pension funds instructed overseas asset managers to dispose of Canadian assets.

"Canada stands together with the Badawi family in this hard time, and we continue to strongly call for the release of both Raif and Samar Badawi", Freeland tweeted. "They need to resolve it together", US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert told a briefing on Wednesday.

Freeland took some criticism for using Twitter to push Canada's foreign policy positions, but Trudeau defended the tactic, saying Canada would continue to use all the communications tools available to make its case.

The move came after Germany's foreign minister last November remarked that Lebanon was a "pawn" of Saudi Arabia after the surprise resignation of its Prime Minister Saad Hariri while in Riyadh.
