Brendan Rodgers claimed Dedryck Boyata had been fit to play despite missing Celtic's 2-1 defeat by AEK Athens which put them out of the Champions League 3-2 on aggregate.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted that Celtic's defending was inadequate during the 2-1 loss to AEK Athens which spelt the end of the Glaswegians' Champions League journey.

Fans were obviously disappointed to go out of the Champions League at this stage, with many expecting the side to reach the group stages, however, a number of them took to social media to share their opinions on one man.

Croatian forward Marko Livaja's strike early in the second half left Celtic needing two unanswered goals to progress.

The Scottish champions drop down to the Europa League play-off, where they will face Latvian side Spartaks Jurmala or Lithuanian side Suduva, and Rodgers said: "The Europa League is still a prestigious competition".

The Belgium global is missing Tuesday's Champions League qualifier at AEK Athens and says it is down to injury.

"When you add that to the goal we conceded in the first leg then we're really disappointed".

Lichtenstein also said: "Entering the last 10 months of his contract, everyone understands that he can not put his career at risk by playing even slightly injured or at 95 per cent. Dedryck can not put his future and his family's future in danger by playing without being 100 per cent".

FENENRBACHE have had a bid for Dedryck Boyata rejected by Celtic, according to reports in Turkey.

Asked if he felt frustrated on a night where defensive inadequacies proved costly, he said: "Yes, of course".
