Elway: Kaepernick not a potential backup QB for Broncos

Broncos’ John Elway says he might still seek a veteran backup QB

But the team is not ruling out the possibility of bringing on another quarterback.

The Denver Broncos need to find a backup quarterback for the upcoming National Football League season after demoting Paxton Lynch to the third spot and second-year QB Chad Kelly still being developed.

If Keenum goes down, is Kelly really the answer?

Elway's answer was...interesting. And assumes no one has Google. Elway made a decision to address the situation head-on by revealing that the Broncos offered the QB a contract and he turned it down.

"Colin had his chance here", said John Elway. He didn't take it.

"I don't know if I'm legally able to say this, but he's had his chance to be here. He didn't take it", Elway responded.

After Peyton Manning retired in 2016, Elway tried to trade for Kaepernick during the offseason but the deal with the 49ers fell through after the quarterback declined to restructure his contract.

That's when he revealed that the team offered a contract to the former San Francisco 49ers QB, but he had turned it down.

As Ian Rapoport of NFL Media notes, Kaepernick was seeking a guaranteed salary when the Broncos were interested in trading for him two offseasons ago.

It didn't get better after '16. Instead, Kaepernick was cut and hasn't been in the league since, and the Broncos are still trying to figure out their quarterback situation, at least in terms of who will be the backup with the addition of Case Keenum as the unquestioned starter.

Kaepernick wound up earning around $14 million in 2016 with salary plus bonuses, roughly equal to what Denver wanted to pay him for two seasons.
