Forecasters urge caution as storm churns in Gulf

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km) from the center.

Tropical Storm Isaac, which passed between the Caribbean island nations of Dominica and Martinique late Wednesday and early Thursday, is now moving nearly due west across the eastern Caribbean Sea.

Forecasters said Florence is expected to continue moving farther inland across the Carolinas through the weekend before turning toward the central Appalachian Mountains early next week.

While now classified as a hurricane, Helene will be downgraded to a storm by the time it reaches the shores of Northern Ireland.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a weather briefing on Tuesday that the tropical wave was expected to reach the mid- to lower Texas coast by Friday. As Hurricane Florence traveled across the ocean, its winds basically pile up water that is higher than the ordinary level of the sea. No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

N.H.C. said at 5:00 p.m. that the center of Tropical Storm Isaac was located near latitude 14.9 North, longitude 63.2 West. Isaac is moving toward the west near 16 miles per hour (26 km/h), and this general motion with a decrease in forward speed is expected for the next few days.

"Isaac is expected to produce additional rainfall of 2 to 3 inches with isolated maximum totals of up to 5 inches across southeast Puerto Rico", the center said.

In its latest advisory, the US Hurricane Center placed Helene about 760 miles off the Azores and calculated the maximum sustained wind speed at 65mph.

The Met Office said a Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique but was expected to be discontinued by Thursday evening.

It's a detail that almost got lost among all the wind, rain and storm surge data sent out by the National Hurricane Center on Wednesday. Locally higher amounts for storm surge are possible along the rivers and sounds near New Bern, NC.
