It was Ronaldo who got the breakthroug goal in the 50th minute as a poor clearance landed at the feet of the Portuguese, who had the simple tasking slotting into an empty net. Ronaldo doubled his tally shortly after with a low cross that went past the Sassuolo keeper.

He's off the mark! Interestingly, it was his 400th career goal. He is up and running and his three-and-a-half game drought (!) is over.

The win is Juventus' fourth from four games this season.

Ronaldo has won the Champions League five times, including each of the last three seasons with Madrid, and one of Juve's prime reasons for signing him was so they could win the competition for the first time since 1996.

The 33-year-old then finished off a rapid counter-attack by shooting into the bottom corner after 65 minutes.

Ronaldo could have completed his hat-trick with 12 minutes remaining but he fired wide of the upright with a first-time effort from close range, before he missed an even bigger sitter two minutes later.

Costa elbowed, headbutted and spat in the face of Federico Di Francesco in the closing stages of a game in which Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to give Juventus the lead.

Juventus, who are seeking a record-extending eighth successive Serie A title, are the only team in the division still with a flawless record.

This is going to be a huge story in world football. The victory was tarnished, however, by a lamentable spitting incident involving Douglas Costa.
