Kenyan Sets World Record at Berlin Marathon

Eliud Kipchoge crosses the line to win the 45th Berlin Marathon and set a new world record in the process

Kipchoge kept up the pace to sprint through the Brandenburg Gate and complete a world record race that cements his reputation as one of the greatest runners of all time.

It was a clean sweep for Kenya after Amos Kipruto came in second with 2:06:23 while Wilson Kipsang won with 2:06:48 as the unofficial time.

By the half way mark, Kipchoge had completely imposed himself on the race with chasing compatriot Wilson Kipsang and Amos Kipruto nowhere in sight.

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge points at a clock displaying his time after winning the Berlin Marathon setting a new world record on September 16, 2018 in Berlin.

As the race progressed, it was now never a question of if, but when he would be breaking the World Record, for the seventh time in the same course, over the last 15 years.

Acclaimed as the greatest marathon runner of the modern era, Kipchoge has dominated marathon racing since making his debut in Hamburg in 2013 after a successful track career that saw him win world gold and silver (2003, 2007) in the 5000m and Olympic silver and bronze (2008, 2004) over the same distance. By 40 kilometrers, reached in 1:55:32, a world record looked a certainty.

The good news, in terms of the race rather than the record, was that Kipsang seemed to be gassed, having lost contact momentarily with his own pacers through 15km.

Kipchoge revealed that he planned on crossing the half marathon mark in 61 minutes.

After the race Kipchoge revealed that things didn't quite go according to plan after all his three pacemakers dropped off.

For months before the race, Kipchoge has maintained that he was focused on winning in Berlin.

Boosted after leaving Boit, he surged, running the 27th kilometre in just 2:51 - seven seconds faster than necessary.

But even after the last one peeled off after 25-kilometres, Kipchoge showed no sign of slowing, passing the 30km mark in 1:26:45, with a pace of 2:52 per 1,000-metres.

Following his superb performance, the 33-year-old said that he would defend his title in 2019 hoping to break his current record. The only question was how far inside Kimetto's record he would get.

"I had great belief that I could achieve this feat and running a sub 2 hours two minutes was simply fantastic and I believe I can still go below that with such good conditions", said Kipchoge, adding that he could have posted better times if he went with the pacesetters up to 30km mark.

Kenya's Edna Kiplagat finished fourth in a time of 2:21:18 and made history of her own by becoming the first female athlete to run in all major marathons and finishing within the top six in all.

Kipchoge now adds the official world record to his extensive list of achievements.

Kipchoge has now won 10 of the 11 marathons he has run.
