Brett Kavanaugh: Judge accuser 'given more time' for hearing

Both of those former teenagers have now denied any knowledge of the incident.

The lawyer for a woman who Brett Kavanaugh's accuser has said attended the 1980s party at which he allegedly molested her has told Senate Republican investigators that the woman doesn't recall such a gathering or know the Supreme Court nominee.

US Senator Susan Collins of ME offered her most extensive remarks yet about her nationally watched decision making as she considers whether or not to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the US Supreme Court in the coming days.

In the past, Collins has said she would never to put a judge any federal court if the person nominated showed a "hostility" to the Roe decision and sought to overturn it.

The letter says Ford "accepts" the committee's request that in the coming week she would "provide her first-hand knowledge of Brett Kavanaugh's sexual misconduct". The second is more interesting. Meanwhile, the committee's 11 Republicans - all men - have been seeking an outside female attorney to interrogate Ford, mindful of the election-season impression that could be left by men trying to pick apart a woman's assertion of a sexual attack.

But in an email late Saturday, Keyser attorney Howard Walsh told the committee she "does not know Mr. Kavanaugh and she has no recollection" of ever attending a gathering with Kavanaugh.

The lawyer acknowledged to CNN that Keyser is a lifelong friend of Ford's.

Ford's lawyer Debra Katz said in response to Keyser's attorney's statement that it makes sense that Keyser wouldn't remember, because Ford has said she did not share her allegations "publicly or with anyone for years".

"It's not surprising that Ms Keyser has no recollection of the evening as they did not discuss it", Katz said in a statement. "It's also unremarkable that Ms. Keyser does not remember attending a specific gathering 30 years ago at which nothing of outcome happened to her. Dr. Ford of course will never forget this gathering because of what happened to her there".

On Friday, President Donald Trump sought to cast doubt on Ford's allegation that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982 when both were high school students in Maryland. They'd "plow through" he declared, a remarkable confession that they'll bulldoze Ford and vote to confirm no matter what.

Collins said Kavanaugh told her that he did believe in such precedents. Or how she got there. Between Trump's ridiculous assertion that a 15-year-old's failure to report a sex crime (which launched the #WhyIDidntReport social media phenomenon) and the nutty mistaken identity plot (which seems to concede Ford was attacked) Republicans have inflicted far more damage on this nomination than Democrats have up until now. And the two neutral parties she says were at the event have zero recollection of it. By her own account, she suffered "post-traumatic stress disorder". Because this never happened, I had no idea who was making this accusation until she identified herself yesterday.

The event was meant to honor "civility, cooperation and compromise". Or that Kavanaugh was the perpetrator of the bad thing that happened.

As if that weren't enough, an employee of CRC on loan to the Senate Judiciary Committee, Garrett Ventry, resigned for falsifying his résumé and for alleged sexual harassment. Or other witnesses will come forward between now and then.
