Stop Brexit? UK’s Labour Party mulls backing new referendum

The leader of the Labour party, Jeremy Corbyn, was in attendance at Anfield for Liverpool's game against Southampton on Saturday and he laid a wreath at the Hillsborough memorial.

He is expected to face pressure at the party's annual conference in Liverpool to commit to a new referendum.

The YouGov survey of 1,054 Labour members found even in the North and Midlands, where many Labour constituencies voted Leave, there was overwhelming support for a second referendum.

The Labour leader has refused to get behind another vote on the issue, despite increasingly-chaotic Brexit negotiations, with him and shadow chancellor John McDonnell saying that they would prefer a general election.

"We would vote it down if it didn't meet our tests in order to send the government, if it is still in office, straight back to the negotiating table and if there is a general election and we are in office we would go straight to the negotiating table".

More than 100 local Labour associations have submitted motions to the conference, which starts Sunday, urging a "People's Vote" - a new referendum - with a choice between leaving on terms agreed by the government or staying in the EU.

The leader of the British Labour Party has said he will back a second Brexit referendum if it is supported by a conference of his party.

Many activists believe that with Mrs May's plans in disarray following the rejection of her Chequers proposals by European Union leaders in Salzburg, the time is now right for Labour to throw its weight behind a fresh ballot. That left May's leadership under siege and Britain at growing risk of crashing out of the European Union on March 29 with no deal in place. After weeks of both sides making positive noises about prospects of clinching a divorce deal and their future trading relationship, the mood turned sour on Thursday in Salzburg, Austria, when the bloc's leaders, one by one, came out to criticize May's Chequers plans.

LIVERPOOL, England - Britain's Labour Party may hold the fate of Brexit in its hands - if only it can decide what to do.

"We are going to be resolute about this", Raab added.

However in an interview with the Sunday Mirror, he said that he would accept a vote by conference for a second referendum. "The question I think that has to be answered now by the government, by the European Union leaders, is what room for movement is there, how do we move on from where we ended up last week?"
