Spurs' task was made more hard than it needed to be when Anthony Knockaert reduced the deficit in the 93rd minute, prompting a nervy final few seconds at the Amex Stadium.

'The spirit that we showed today was the spirit that I wanted to see in all of the games, ' Pochettino said. "I am happy with the attitude, spirit". We know very well we have a great quality, with great players who can play unbelievable football.

"On the balance of play, it got a little bit frantic in the last period where they had a few chances, I think we had as many good opportunities as they did", Hughton told BT Sport.

Hughton said: "We have two very big games coming up as regards the level of team we're playing against".

'It's impossible that it happens again.

"And you know what is going to happen when we don't win games, the first responsible is me".

"It is private. I think the punishment came from the court and public judgement is massive punishment".

For Kane it was an end to 469 minutes without a goal for club and country and Pochettino never had any doubts about his quality. "I have no problems with theirs, but we certainly should have had one as well".

"It's always a guarantee to have him on the pitch because he's a special player".

Pochettino is stuck in the middle of the worst run of his four-year reign after losing three games on the bounce and he faces a tricky trip to Brighton on Saturday, followed by a Carabao Cup tie with Watford - who they lost to in the league 11 days ago.

It might have been different had Knockaert scored when his side were 1-0 down but he tried to walk the ball in and his shot was easily saved.

'His best chance was at 1-0 and if he scores that and it's 1-1 then it's a different result, ' he said.

"The only way we can stop that [questioning and criticism] is by winning games, and if we don't win everyone is going to criticise more than now", said Pochettino.

"Maybe we're still here in five years or maybe in one week we are not here, but always we're talking well about the club and trying to help them to achieve all they want".

Brighton had a goal ruled out for offside and substitute Erik Lamela added Tottenham's second with a neat finish on 76 minutes.
