Congo Doctor, Yazidi Activist Awarded Nobel Peace Prize

Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad awarded Nobel Peace Prize 2018

"Both laureates have made a crucial contribution to focusing attention on, and combating, such war crimes", said Berit Reiss-Andersen, chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, on announcing the award at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.

Congolese doctor Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad, former captive of Islamic State turned global advocate, were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work against sexual violence.

Murad, 25, was one of an estimated 3,000 girls and women from Iraq's Yazidi minority group who were kidnapped in 2014 by IS militants and sold into sexual slavery. He said, "I can see in the faces of many women how they are happy to be recognized".

She was "given to more than 10" ISIS fighters, Murad later recalled, and passed around to be sexually abused, sometimes hourly. Today, rape continues to be deployed in Burma, Syria, Iraq, Libya, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Kashmir to name just a few countries.

- A United Nations investigative team that will collect and preserve evidence of acts by Islamic State in Iraq that may be war crimes, crimes against humanity or genocide started work in August, almost a year after the Security Council created it. Murad was honored for her refusal "to remain silent and ashamed of the abuses to which they have been subjected", the committee said.

In an interview with the prize committee hours after he was named along with Iraqi Nadia Murad, a surprised Mukwege said: "I need a little bit (more) time to really be able to talk". In celebrating Murad and Mukwege, the Nobel Peace Prize has indicted all of us for our failure to eliminate conflict rape.

And she and the Yazidis have won a high-profile supporter - Lebanese-British lawyer and rights activist Amal Clooney, who also penned the foreword to Murad's book, "The Last Girl", published in 2017. From Africa to South East Asia, and from Latin America to the Middle East, rape remains a part of the everyday impact of war throughout the world.

The Yazidis, a religious sect whose beliefs combine elements of ancient Middle Eastern religions, are regarded by Islamic State as devil-worshippers.

On Wednesday, three researchers who "harnessed the power of evolution" to produce enzymes and antibodies that have led to a new best-selling drug won the Nobel Prize in chemistry.
