A man in MI recently learned that a large rock he'd been using as a doorstop for about thirty years is a rare meteorite with an estimated value of $100,000.

After Central Michigan University Geology Professor Mona Sirbescu determined the doorstop was no ordinary rock, she reportedly sent two pieces over to the Smithsonian. The man, who has asked to remain anonymous, says that he knew the 10 kg rock came from outer space ever since he bought his house in 1988.

For years, the MI man used space rock as a doorstep.

When Dr Sirbescu examined it under an X-ray fluorescence instrument, she found that the rock was an iron-nickel meteorite with about 88 percent iron and 12 percent nickel, a metal rarely found on Earth. "It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically".

Now, the space rock, dubbed Edmore meteorite, is waiting to find a permanent home.

A man in MI had a rare meteorite in his house, but he didn't know it. It was still warm when they dug it out in the morning and it had been in the farm since.

And so this new owner kept it for 30 years, moving with it when he left the farm - he used it as a doorstop, mostly; except for the occasions when his kids took the rock to school for show and tell.

This year, the man was inspired by stories of MI residents finding and selling pieces of meteorites.

Eventually, the man noticed that people were making money from finding and selling small pieces of meteorite, so he figured he should get his giant rock evaluated. But then again, isn't the Earth itself just a big space rock? While touring the property, the man spotted the rock propping open a door and asked the farmer what it was. The previous owner of the farm told him it was a meteorite that he and his father saw coming down at a night on their property in the 1930s.

Typically what happens is that either the meteorites are sold to a museum or to some collectors or sellers, looking for a profit.

There's now a bit of a scuffle over who will buy the meteorite - both the Smithsonian and a mineral museum in ME are considering purchasing the incredible find.
