MI man's doorstop rock turns out to be a $100k meteorite

A friend referred him to Mona Sirbescu, a geology faculty member at Central Michigan University's College of Science and Engineering.

"For 18 years, the answer has been categorically "no" - meteor wrongs, not meteorites", she said.

"It's the most valuable specimen I have ever held in my life, monetarily and scientifically", Sibescu added, noting that the meteorite is composed of of 88.5 percent iron and 11.5 percent nickel.

Central Michigan University estimates the meteorite's value at around $100,000. He contacted Central Michigan University who tested and confirmed that the rock was not only a meteorite, but a particularly large one at that. "This is it - I am holding this space rock that tells us so much about the origins of the universe".

The farmer said that it had come down onto the property in the '30s - "and it made a heck of a noise when it hit", the new owner recalled him saying, according to CMU's statement.

The man told Sirbescu that he kept the rock for the next 30 years, even after moving away from the farm.

"I said, 'Wait a minute". And now a man in Grand Rapids just found out the meteorite he has from that impact is worth at least $100,000.

The man reportedly hasn't figured out exactly where the meteorite will end up, but a number of institutions are apparently considering purchasing it from him for display. According to the report, the man had been using the meteorite as a doorstop for the last 30 years. A colleague there further analyzed the sample, including with an acid test to reveal the Widmanstätten pattern, a property of most iron-nickel meteorites that can not be faked.

"What typically happens with these at this point is that meteorites can either be sold and shown in a museum or sold to collectors and sellers looking to make a profit", Sirbescu said. Whatever amount he winds up donating, Sirbescu said her students, the university and herself have already been beneficiaries of the find.

In January, the man chose to learn once and for all about the value of the doorstep.
