President Trump on Tuesday accepted Nikki Haley's resignation as US ambassador to the United Nations, marking a sudden and unexpected end to the tenure of one of the administration's most prominent figures.

A former governor of SC who is the daughter of Indian immigrants, Haley is a rising star in the Republican Party and is often mentioned as a possible candidate for the 2020 presidential elections.

Trump ventured outside of his core group of supporters when he announced his intent to nominate Haley, then-South Carolina governor, to the post of U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Haley was an early and vocal critic of the President-elect during the long GOP primary, endorsing Sens.

"I wanted to do this because Nikki Haley has been very special to me", Trump told reporters of his pop-up presser, crediting Haley with making the gig "a more glamorous position than it was two years ago".

"More instability in an already unstable Trump administration", Rep.

Lev Radin / Pacific Press/NewscomNikki Haley is stepping down as the United States ambassador to the United Nations. 'I can promise you what I'll be doing is campaigning for this one. "And I think any woman who has felt violated or felt mistreated in any way, they have every right to speak up".

Haley, the former governor of SC, was a critic of Trump's during the 2016 Republican primaries and endorsed his opponent Sen.

Trump praised her as having done an incredible job and said he hoped she could come back to the administration in another capacity.

"I proudly serve in this administration, and I enthusiastically support most of its decisions and the direction it is taking the country", Haley wrote.

The President said he plans to name a successor for the US's top diplomatic post at the United Nations in two to three weeks.

Trump also said on Tuesday his next meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is happening and officials are in the process of setting it up.

White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow suggested she had got "ahead of the curve" and had a "momentary confusion". Her stepping down comes at a odd time, what could be considered one of the most successful moments in the Trump presidency.

At the U.N., Haley helped spearhead the Trump administration's efforts to combat what it alleged to be anti-American and anti-Israel actions by the global body.

"Now the United States is respected".

Her warm chat with Trump has sparked speculation she is being lined up for a Senate position in the wake of next month's midterms, with pundits touting Haley as a potential future vice presidential or presidential candidate.

Haley is one of the few original cabinet appointees remaining in the Trump administration.

She's helped rein in Iranian aggression, moved progress on a denuclearized North Korea, assured Israel we have her back, and overall just gained the USA more respect on the worldwide stage. "It's not diplomatic, and they find it amusing".

But if there was a simple, good reason for this departure being announced now, we don't know it yet.

Trump was asked why the announcement was made now since Haley is staying until the end of the year.
