Saudi consulate will be searched as pressure mounts over missing journalist

Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) speaks to reporters at the US Capitol, in Washington, DC, October 5, 2018.

However, before Erdogan spoke, unnamed Turkish police sources as well as an adviser to Erdogan told the media that they believed that Khashoggi was killed at the Saudi Consulate, which he entered October 2.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia relations are already at a deep low.

A statement from Turkish spokesman Hami Aksoy said Saudi authorities were "open to cooperation" and had stated their willingness to cooperate and would allow an examination of the consulate grounds.

The country has demanded Saudi Arabia prove he left - despite not giving evidence of the claim he was killed inside.

Ankara sought permission Sunday to carry out a search after the foreign ministry summoned the Saudi ambassador for a second time, Turkish television reported.

No evidence has been presented.

The search will take place as part of the official investigation, which was being conducted "in an intense manner", he said without giving any date.

Mr Khashoggi had been living in the USA, where he contributed articles to the Washington Post's opinion section.

"What was explained to us is this: He was killed, make your funeral preparations", Kislakci said. I don't like hearing about it. Hopefully, that (it) will sort itself out.

"I know nothing right now".

U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed concern about the writer's disappearance, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said U.S. officials have raised the matter with their Saudi counterparts. Banners read, "We will not leave without Jamal Khashoggi".

The Washington Post has published an image it described as the last surveillance photograph of its missing Saudi contributor.

Reacting to the news of his alleged murder, Mr Khashoggi's Turkish fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, said she "did not believe he has been killed". The consulate insists Khashoggi left its premises, contradicting Turkish officials. Turkish investigators are analyzing footage from security cameras outside the consulate as well as airport entries and exits, he added. "We want to swiftly get results", he said, adding without explanation: "My expectation is still positive". He was a fierce critic of the Saudi regime.

Erdogan's comments were his most direct suggestion yet of potential Saudi culpability in Khashoggi's disappearance.

I have known Jamal Khashoggi for 18 years and although outspoken, he was not one to take unplanned risks.

Prince Turki later became the Saudi Ambassador to the United Kingdom and the USA, exposing Khashoggi to numerous roles of critical importance.

What have the Saudis said?

"Jamal has many friends in Saudi Arabia, and I am one of them", he said in a statement, saying the two had kept in touch while he was living overseas "despite differences".

The fate of a dissident Saudi journalist who has disappeared in Istanbul, remains unknown.

It would also put Britain directly at odds with the crown prince, who is a key United Kingdom ally.

Khashoggi, at the time of his disappearance, was working for the Washington Post and writing nearly regularly under the "Global Opinion" column. Fearing for his life, Khashoggi has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States for the past year.

"Our security officials are investigating the issue in every detail", Yasin, Aktay, an adviser to Erdogan, told CNN Turk on Sunday. "The free world deserves answers" in a Tweet on Monday evening.

There he wrote opinion pieces for the Washington Post and continued to appear on Arab and Western TV channels.
