DC Comics hires James Gunn after Disney fires him

Fresh off his Marvel firing, James Gun is reportedly in talks to write and potentially direct DC's Suicide Squad sequel.

Gunn, best known for helming two Guardians of the Galaxy films, was sacked by Marvel in August this year after his old, offensive tweets resurfaced on Twitter.

There's still no release date set for Suicide Squad 2, but Warner Bros. now has 5th June, 2020 reserved for an unnamed DC movie.

According to Justin Kroll of Variety, O'Connor - who initially joined the project a little over a year ago - opted to exit Suicide Squad 2 following frustrations he had with the studio.

The gig with DC marks the first time that Gunn has been tapped for a project since the filmmaker was unceremoniously ousted from Disney's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY franchise due to a series of controversial tweets unearthed by alt-right journalists.

Gavin O'Connor (The Accountant) had previously been announced to direct and he was expected to co-write the script with Todd Stashwick.

Warner has been looking for somebody to take control of the new Suicide Squad flick, taking a look at original director David Ayer, Mel Gibson, Daniel Espinosa, and others.

io9's report includes phrases like "reportedly", which suggests that the outlet may have cobbled together enough inside info about the pending Gunn deal to elicit a clear response from Warner Bros.

Production on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was quickly put on hold and the franchise's cast, which includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel and Dave Bautista, signed an open letter asking that Gunn be reinstated as the third film's director.

Ayer welcomed Gunn aboard and wrote, "I think it's an incredibly courageous and smart move by the studio".
